I want to remind that #EUnomia is a research project funded with around 3 millions, also aiming to investigate the #fediverse.

companies leading #projectEUnomia are also involved in:

- mass surveilience
- military and law enforcment
- developing strategies and tools countering mass movements
- countering local journalism with clickbait

@Gargron is/was on their pay check with at least €63,290.

> For centuries, woman-to-woman marriages in pre-colonial African societies seemed to indicate to Europeans that the strong correspondence between male to man and female to woman was not prevalent in Africa. This practice of same-sex marriage was documented in more than 40 precolonial African societies: a woman could marry one or more women if she could secure the bridewealth necessary or was expected to uphold and augment kinship ties.

“Surveillance capitalism” isn’t a corruption of (an otherwise virtuous) capitalism. It is a precise means of describing modern-day capitalism. Opposing it doesn’t mean simply opposing surveillance, it means opposing capitalism.

@pants @balrogboogie The statement that "proprietary ownership of software gives the owner unjust power" is perfectly correct, of course. Because software is a means. But this is true of all means. Private ownership of Amazon warehouses gives the owner unjust power. Private ownership of land gives the owner unjust power. Of apartment buildings. Of natural resources by governments.

The problem with the free software movement wasn't that it defends free access to knowledge.
The problem with the free software movement is that it made sure to sabotage itself, by putting its head in the sand about systems of power and pretending this is a matter of elaborate law codes like a programming puzzle.

This is how there was so much incredible work poured into Linux and BSD etc. only for the Web to end up the way it is today, for e-commerce, mobile etc. to end up the way it is today.

absolutely losing it over this pull request: "fix original typesetter's errors to reproduce cummings' manuscript"

Please do not base your linguistic arguments on historical facts, e.g. "this pronoun was used in 1300s" or similar.

Because this legitimises other historical arguments, like for example those against genderless language in German, French, and similar.

Languages change all the time and we don't need something to have been around for centuries or decades to be acceptable. "Covid" or "corona" weren't really words used like today in any language before March 2020, now probably they are words in almost all living languages and one of the most frequently used words.

Please be careful to avoid legitimising unscientific and fallacious arguments unintentionally. It's eventually harmful to those who are the most oppressed by such arguments.

hey all, here's a new computer thing I made! it's called the Nonsense Laboratory, and it's a series of weird little tools for manipulating the spelling and sound of words with machine learning: https://artsexperiments.withgoogle.com/nonsense-laboratory/

it's part of a series of projects launched yesterday showing the outcomes of the Artists + Machine Intelligence grant program, which you can learn more about here: https://experiments.withgoogle.com/ami-grants

Just got this in the mail today! It’s my current turn work into a hobby of finding quality tools shtick lol. A remake of the classic Unicomp Model M series mechanical keyboard.

Its so much fun to type on. But also loud as fuck.

Hey , any Masto Admins that have had to trouble shoot problems with themes? I just migrated to , and when I tried to select a different theme that comes preinstalled with that fork, my web front end just stopped working. I don't know how to even switch it back lol.

Just migrated to ! Easy enough migration and everything went well. That is until I tried to switch to the Fair Floss theme. The web front end no longer works ha.

💌 I like email. There is no expectation that it is answered quickly, so I can check it once a day, and only on workdays. It's good both for short answers and long-form discussions, with one person or many. It's federated and at least partially decentralised. There's a client serving all kinds of needs, from phones to the command line.

as we talk about the morality of vaccine patents

i think it is a nice time to also remember historical precident

jonas salk did not patent the polio vaccine. he went out of his way to make sure it was not patented.

he never got rich. he actively made sure he didn't get rich off of it.

but that history is full of stories about how for the rest of his life, jonas salk did not have to ever pay for a beer in any bar in this country. he would get on airplanes and once somebody recognized his name, the entire damn plane would stand up and clap for him. he constantly had hotel rooms comped, meals for free at restaurants, thus and so.

because he was surrounded by people who knew he had saved their children from having to ever consider the fear of an iron lung, and were overwhelmingly grateful for it.

he was always modest and demure when recognized thusly. but i think that when people start saying "well why else would someone make a vaccine, if not to get paid for it and hold the patent", i think it is good to remember these stories. the world did not punish jonas salk for not patenting the polio vaccine. the world loved him for it. maybe not in the structures that billionaires are most used to. but they did love him for it, in small ways, in humble ways, on the individual level.
